The charming Olive Story Museum in Makriotika Village, within the beautiful Pylaros Valley region of Kefalonia is a little gem and, in our opinion, well worth a visit.
The Olive Story Museum which was officially opened during the summer season of 2010, was a project undertaken by the Pylaros Municipality and has been funded by the operations section for community enterprises of the LEADER+ program.
Summer opening hours are 11:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs.

'The Olive Tree adorns our lives growing everywhere in the valleys on the slopes of the hills, on the plateaus and sometimes even found near the seashore, a proud and patient tree, a tree which has accompanied the lives of people for thousands of years' ............
if you would like to know more about the history of Olive Oil, to understand the importance of it in the local culture and to read the story, plus of course see the amazing symbol of agricultural legacy ..... you will need to visit the Museum .... err, perhaps click here and see our video 'The Walk to Makriotika'
When you visit, why not also take the opportunity of relaxing in the village square with a drink or light snack at the smart Village Cafe - The Nikteritha (translated it means 'bat')! The Cafe is open mornings (until about 13:00 hrs) and then again in the evenings from about 17:30 hrs onwards. From the village square you can enjoy the wonderful views down the valley to the sea at Agia Efimia.

How to get to Makriotika
Unfortunately, there isn't a regular, reliable bus service for holidaymaker's to use on the island. We recommend car hire if you wish to explore this magical island. However, if you are staying in Agia Efimia and wish to visit Makriotika you can make use of the bus service provided by the Pylaros Municipality. The bus visits all the villages in the Pylaros Valley - including Makriotika!
You can pick up a bus timetable
from the Tourist Information Office in Agia Efimia; the bus leaves from the harbour front each morning.

Of course, no reference to the village of Makriotika would be complete without mentioning the Traditional Village Taverna, the Maklithari, where Petrangelos, the owner, will offer you a warm welcome. The taverna is open evenings only during the summer season. Dine under the stars in the village square! You can see the Maklithari Taverna by clicking here.
